He discovers that his products have been copied by Temu, the new online sales giant from China, and has to close his business

A small French company, Carabelle Studio, has had its products copied by Chinese e-commerce giant Temu. After eleven years, the boss reluctantly had to fire all his employees and close the store.

It’s a sad story, like many more that could follow with the arrival of this new e-commerce giant from China. The Temu site was the subject of a report by Envoyé Spécial on France 2 on Thursday, March 14. And the program conveyed the cruel misfortune of Alexis Toupet and his teams, who ran a small business near Montpellier.

The boss had to close the door, 11 years after founding his creative stamp business in Mèze, in the Hérault. The company called “Carabelle Studio” could not withstand the competition from the Chinese online shopping site Temu, which is crushing the market with unbeatable prices.

The team ofCorrespondent met the former boss, who described his business as thriving before Temu’s arrival. “Carabelle Studio” exported thousands of products to 47 countries. But last spring the success stopped…

The Chinese site began offering products similar to its own, sometimes with a disturbing similarity, but at unbeatable prices. The stamps that imitated the French company’s stamps were offered for 1.5 or 2 euros, eight times cheaper than what “Carabelle Studio” offered.

“Now It’s the End”

Temu’s attack force was irreparably successful: Alexis Toupet was able to determine that a tampon sold on the Chinese site for just 2 euros could generate 150 sales within a few hours. “It’s huge” for these types of products, says the former manager. Fatally, he had to fire his seven permanent employees and close “Carabelle Studio”.

“End of a beautiful story”, says Alexis Toupet, in a tone of fatigue that suggests his company won’t be the only victim of the Chinese e-commerce giant. According to France 2, almost 80,000 products are currently offered at reduced prices by the platform.
