Made more flexible by Nicole Belloubet on Thursday, the ‘level groups’ at the university will see the light of day at the start of the school year, Gabriel Attal announced on Friday.
The Prime Minister specifies that this new position, which will concern students of the sixth and fifth grades of French and mathematics, will leave a slight “flexibility” to the institutions.

Has the government really gone backwards with regard to the level groups in secondary school? This is what the Minister of National Education, Nicole Belloubet, suggested on Thursday, March 7. In an interview given to Worldwhich the former Minister of Justice then spoke about during a trip to a secondary school “groups needed”immediately “flexibility” left to locations and times “as a whole class for certain ranges” during this year. Statements welcomed by the unions, who saw it “a decrease”.

I’m not sure this is the case honestly. Asked about Friday France 5Prime Minister Gabriel Attal confirmed that the measure, resulting from the “shock of knowledge” he himself presented when he was Minister of National Education, will see the light of day in September. The level groups will be “Requested for next school year”, he confirmed. As planned, the sixth and fifth grade students will learn French and math in the coming months.

Get away from the uniform college that does not adapt to everyone’s level

Gabriel Attal, Prime Minister

“Everyone notices that the level of our students has dropped dramatically in recent decades”justified the head of government. “In 2018, a fourth grader had the level of a fifth grader in 1995. To respond to this, we have to take a number of measures. The goal (of the level groups) is for everyone to progress again. (…) .) There will always be are heterogeneous lessons, but for all hours of French and mathematics the students will be in level groups.’

Everything, or almost. While Nicole Belloubet talked about the day before the “certain times” in which all students in a class would come together for French and mathematics, it should only concern the beginning of the school year and the end of the year. “Teachers must be able to assess the level of students at the beginning of the year”continued Gabriel Attal. “Then we can probably visit the class group again at the end of this year to take stock.”

It remains the case that the “flexibility” advocated by the Minister of Education, it will allow students to change groups. “Between (the start of the school year and the end of the year), a student who is in trouble and making progress should be able to transfer to the above group”the Prime Minister pleaded. “We are going to give institutions the flexibility to determine when a student can change groups because his or her level has increased”he continued wishfully “Get away from the uniform college that does not adapt to everyone’s level.”
